Checking DNS inside VPN

DNS must be tested separately from TCP and TLS. A tunnel may fail to open websites because its resolver is unreachable, while a local VPN interface may exist without a working server connection.

Before connecting

  • Open several domains without VPN.
  • Verify automatic date and time.
  • Record Private DNS or system resolver settings.

After connecting

  • Test an HTTPS destination by IP and by domain separately.
  • Compare the system resolver with the resolver configured by the app.
  • Inspect the client log for timeout or SERVFAIL.
  • Repeat on another node without changing other settings.

Interpretation

If IP works and names do not, inspect DNS routing. If neither works, investigate the server connection, outbound, or routing first. Changing DNS cannot repair an unreachable node IP.

The review uses developer documentation and reproducible service diagnostics.
